Tubes vs. Blankets
One of the many controversal issues in the art of raising a champion lamb is whether tubes or blankets benefit lambs the most.
Tubes Sheep tubes go by many names. They are also known as tube blankets, socks, and spandex. Whatever they are called, a tube is a tight-fitting material that covers the majority of the lamb's body. These are mostly worn by lambs at shows. For those that use tubes, they claim they not only keep a lamb clean, but also keep the hide tight for showtime. Others believe that a tube is better for keeping lambs warm during transportation and worn UNDER a blanket only. They believe that a wearing a tube, especially in the summer time, can cause the lamb to sweat its top off. Keep in mind that tubes snag and catch on things easily, ripping and creating holes in your tube.
Blankets Blankets are of a loose-fitting material, usually made of a type of canvas. The primary use of blankets it to keep sheep clean. However, they also aid in protecting the skin from the sun and insects. Blankets are perfect for the use when fitting breeding sheep as well. Blankets keep a lamb cooler by allowing air circulation and simulates some wool growth. Most of us know the hide looks it's best when first removing some wool.
