Sheep Demonstrations

By Lyndsey Keller

Many sheep clubs or organizations require or ask a member to present sheep or lamb demonstrations to their group.  This may be anything from a poster on a certain topic to a hands-on explanation of how something is accomplished. This teaches the member more about a specific topic by researching and presenting it, and teaches the members of the group, often through visual, hands-on, and verbal learning. The following is a list of ideas for a sheep demonstration.

1) Show how to make a homemade lamb halter. They are cheaper than store bought ones, and fun to make.

2) Demonstrate giving SQ and IM injections into fruit such as oranges and bananas.

3) How to prepare for your first lamb

4) Make a video of the lambing process, explaining what is happening during each part of lambing.

5) Show different grooming equipment and demonstrate different procedures for grooming.

6) Explain how wool goes from sheep to sweater

7) Explain the steps to prepare wool for spinning

8) Display products made from sheep

9) Demonstrate how to shear and trim hooves

10) Demonstrate how to wash a lamb.

11) Demonstrate how great lamb meat is! Prepare a lamb meal (or at least a sample) for everyone and provide them with recipe cards for future use.

12) Prepare a feed ration using candy to represent the different components of the feed. For example use candy corn for the rolled corn, M&M's for the minerals, etc. It is fun because at the end you pass out your sample sheep ration.

13) Demonstrate the proper way to show and brace a lamb.

14) Show how to dock and castrate young lambs.

15) Demonstrate how to approach a buyer for your lamb at the fair.

16) Take your members to a slaughter house to see the specific cuts of lamb. Probably better for seasoned members.

17) How to properly bottle-feed a lamb

18) Take your group to a feed mill and show them how feed is mixed properly

19) Set up an exercise course and show them how to use it and how often

20) Show what supplies you need when showing your lamb.

21) Demonstrate ways to stay safe when dealing with a ram.

22) Demonstrate different breeds of sheep and their different qualities

23) How to put on and take a halter off properly.

24) Make soap from sheep's milk

25) Show the different meat cuts of the lamb by making a suit for your lamb and drawing on the meat cuts onto the suit. Have a poster of the meat cuts and explain what they can be used for.

26) Show general lambing supplies such as iodine, scissors for trimming long navel, exam gloves, lubercant in case you need to pull lamb or assist ewe, bottle and nipple for the weak lamb, etc.

27) Show how to deal with different diseases that may affect your lamb.
