Blue or White?
If you didn't already know, club lambs are available in a wide variety of colors. The two most popular colors of lambs are white and blue. When someone first hears of a blue lamb, they seem a bit confused. A blue lamb is a lamb that is grey/black/smokey in color. The color blue can range anywhere from the slightest tint of grey to almost black. For the longest time in the show ring, most lambs were white. It was very rare to see a blue lamb. But when the blue lambs starting winning shows, the more blue lambs there were being shown. Many people often ask, "Should I get a blue or a white lamb?" Well, that all depends.
Many people want blue lambs because they seem to stick out in the show ring. If you were judging a class of ten lambs, nine of them being white, which one is going to stick out the most when entering the ring? More than likely the blue one. However, as blues have became more popular it seems that there are more blue lambs than white ones in the show ring. What does that mean? Well, the opposite is going to happen. Instead of the blue lambs grabbing the judge's attention, the white ones will. Others comment that it's easier to hide faults on a blue lamb (like wrinkles) because of the dark color of the lamb. But, the good things may also be hidden. The lines of muscle definition are much more clearly seen on a white lamb than they are on a blue lamb. But do judges consecutively pick the same color of lambs as winners? Some do, some don't. Just how some judges prefer a taller lamb over a shorter one, some prefer blues over whites, and some whites over blues. There is no way to stop this prejudice against the color of lambs because it is solely the judge's personal opinion. However, there are what I like to call the "true" judges. These judges place lambs in a class where they need to be based on the lamb, not on the lamb's color. It is impossible to predict what color the champion will be from judges like these. As you can see, there are many things to consider when deciding which color of lamb is better.
I recommend to any prospective lamb buyer to choose a lamb without considering the color. Pick the best lamb you can with your budget; you'll be safer in the show ring by doing this. I don't see why anyone would buy a blue lamb when they could've bought a better white lamb for the same money. Some people will pick a specific color of lamb because they know what the judge of their show likes. Even though this may seem safe, there's always a risk at stake. What if you choose a blue lamb because your judge normally picks blues to win. Then a week or maybe a day before your show, you find out that for some reason or another your judge isn't going to be able to make it to the show so he has been replaced with another judge is quite fond of white lambs. The whole time you thought you were playing it safe, your plan back fired. Again, please select the best lamb you can, and be color blind while doing it.
